BIGGEST CHOOSER 2025 WEEK FOUR

“Runaway train never going back
Wrong way on a one-way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I’m neither here nor there”

Soul Asylum captured one of the moments in life when the journey just doesn’t seem worth it. And while this song is about another topic, the message resonates with our intrepid “Choosers.” But there is an oncoming light at the end of the track, and it is not another train. It is a new you on the other side! Don’t give up, don’t ever give up! (Coach Jim Valvano). Thanks for allowing me to pontificate – now on to the observations.

Back in Black

I love Led Zepplin! (Spiderman movie joke). Former Houston Rockets coach, Rudy Tomjanovich, was quoted as saying, “never underestimate the heart of a champion”. Well, never count out a Captain Williams team in the Biggest Chooser competition. With an amazing week of dedication led by Chrisopher George’s season-best 6.18 body weight percentage loss, the Back in Black squad reduced their way in first place at 2.93% points lost. The Red Storm remained poised to be a factor for the entire competition by weighing in at 2.60% to hold down second in the table.

By the Numbers

Besides Christpher George’s stellar week, several other competitors weighed in impressively. Kelly Holland on Team Tan clocked in at 5.10% closely followed by the Red Storm’s Gigi Lasher at 5.08%. Lane Laverack (4.10%, Army Green) and Maggie Moss (4.05%, Turquoise) also had strong weeks.

Behind the Numbers

Cursory research reveals some simple math behind the science of weight loss. This simple math, however, must be executed with painstaking consistency. It takes a caloric deficit of 1500 calories over the course of seven days to lose one pound of body weight.

If you consume 2,000 calories per day that is 14,000 calories in seven days. One must burn 15,500 calories over the same period to lose that elusive pound. In very general terms, we burn on average about 1500 calories per day (10,500 per week) of “normal” activity. So, the challenge becomes clear. Choosers must manipulate their intake and their activity to make it all work. Caloric deficit is the key to success and the only way to utilize the key is plain hard work. Thanks, and see you next week.
