What Being a Summer Camp Counselor at GFSAC means…..and Why YOU Should Apply to be One

April 3rd, 2018

My name is Gabe Gonzalez and I’ve been a Summer Camp Counselor at Granite Falls Swim & Athletic Club for three years and Head Counselor for another three years. Yes, I worked as a camp counselor for six straight summers and honestly, I couldn’t imagine spending each of them any other way. Camp, to me, is one of those few places where you can be yourself and have genuine fun during every moment of the day. During camp, you’re surrounded by a group of counselors that soon become your best friends and a group of kids that every week you’re truly sad to see leave at carpool. I can’t count the number of times spontaneous dance battles, funny dares, or everyone erupting into nonstop laughter happened throughout the camp day. And let me tell you about the Camp Counselor uniform.  As long as your clothing fits the week’s theme, you’re good! I’ve come to camp wearing wigs, tights, bandanas, necklaces, bracelets, and my absolute favorite – all out superhero attire. Just make sure you also pack some sunscreen, because you’ll spend all day having fun in the hot, summer sun! It’s hard to describe exactly what camp means to me because it’s a part of me that is so deeply engrained into who I am. I credit camp for shaping me into the person I am today. I’ve gained leadership, critical thinking, and conflict resolution skills, as well as things I cherish the most – friends and memories that I’ll carry for the rest of my life. If you’re thinking about being a camp counselor this summer, apply and get ready for an unforgettable summer!
